ChambordThe principal chateaux are to be found in departments 41 (Loir et Cher) and 37 (Indre et Loire), in the areas of Blois and Tours. Chateaux such as Blois and Amboise are actually on the Loire; Chambord and Cheverny are south of the Loire, near Blois; Chenonceau, Chinon and Azay-le-Rideau are on tributaries of the Loire, in the Indre et Loire department.Book early to avoid disappointment
Which Loire châteaux to visit? The most visited chateaux are (in order) Chenonceaux built out over the river Cher, the great Chambord, designed in part by Leonardo da Vinci, the chateau at Amboise, and Azay le Rideau on an island on the river Indre.
Other major châteaux, but generally less crowded, include Villandry, Ussé, the royal fortress at Chinon, which is rather different, and Cheverny. See markers oin the map for their locations.
There are dozens more châteaux in the area, some quite small, some large: among these, also worth visiting are the châteaux at Saumur, Langeais, Blois, and Sully sur Loire to the east of Orleans.
The Loire valley areaFor the French, the Loire valley is the dividing line between the northern regions and the southern part of France. "South of the Loire" the weather is deemed to be warmer and sunnier, and though this is in many cases quite normal, it is not always the case. The Loire valley itself became popular in the olden days with the Kings and nobles of France, on account of its mild climate: and like its neighbour to the east, Burgundy, it was a region that provided wine for the inhabitants of Paris and the north of France. Chateaux and vineyards are among the many attractions of this region today.
This page includes two French regions, the Pays de la Loire in the west, and the Centre - Val-de-Loire region which us further inland, plus the Poitou part of the former Poitou- Charentes region.
