► Covid-19 INFORMATION - 2024. France is fully open for tourism, and hotels are operating normally. There are no restrictions on people entering France, but older visitors are advised to be up to date with their vaccinations. The situation may change at any time .
The risks are mathematically smaller in smaller hotels, with less rooms and less guests, than they are in big hotels. Besides, independent establishments, particularly those that are family-run, have a huge interest in making sure they remain virus-free, as their very survival could depend on it.

Hotel star ranking in France:

Stars are usually a guide to quality, but not always, since in France they are attributed in function of amenities and services provided, but not necessarily the quality of those amenities. The system was revised in 2009, and though it is now more flexible than before, the classification still remains amenity based , rather than quality based. This directory includes several  hotels which, in terms of quality, do not have as many stars as one might expect.

The Loire valley area

For the French, the Loire valley is the dividing line between the northern regions and the southern part of France. "South of the Loire" the weather is deemed to be warmer and sunnier, and though this is in many cases quite normal, it is not always the case. The Loire valley itself became popular in the olden days with the Kings and nobles of France, on account of its mild climate: and like its neighbour to the east, Burgundy, it was a region that provided wine for the inhabitants of Paris and the north of France.    Chateaux and vineyards are among the many attractions of this region today.
This page includes two French regions, the Pays de la Loire in the west, and the Centre - Val-de-Loire region which us further inland, plus the Poitou part of the former Poitou- Charentes region.
