  L'Orée des Bois ** Modern but traditionally styled two-star hotel with ten rooms in a village in the Sologne area, four miles south of  the royal château of Chambord. the name means the Glade in the Woods. The hotel offers large and spacious rooms, and there is a good restaurant close by.

• Chenonceaux (37 - Indre et Loire) 
  €€€  The four star Auberge du bon Laboureur (The Good Ploughman inn) is based on an ancient posthouse, built before the French Revolution. It is located in Chenonceaux, within walking distance of the famous chateau. The hotel is an ensemble of five village houses in an area of gardens. Swimming pool, gourmet restaurant.
• Amboise - (37 Indre et Loire)
   €   Hotel la Brèche **  Classic French provincial hotel, in this small town on the river Loire. Visitors to this hotel appreciate its calm location, eating outside in the courtyard, and the friendliness of the welcome. Nothing fancy, but good value for money, plenty of charm and character, and a warm welcome from the patron.
• Chinon (37 Indre et Loire)
   €   Hotel Plantagenet **  Pleasant traditional two-star hotel peacefully located on a square in the old town of Chinon, facing the river Vienne. Clean, comfortable and charming are words used by people who have stayed in this hotel. Good value for money, and a good spot from which to explore the local area, its vineyards and châteaux such as Azay le Rideau.

  Hotel Luccotel ** Modern two-star hotel situated in spacious grounds on a rise overlooking the old town of Loches. Restaurant, heated indoor pool, sauna, tennis court. While it has less character than an old hotel, this independent hotel is one up from the standardised two-star chain hotels and is affiliated with Logis de France.
• Near Saumur (49 - Maine et Loire) 
  €€€    Hostellerie le Prieuré   Four-star hotel in a historic building, at Chênehutte-Trèves-Cunault,  four miles from Saumur. Standing on raised ground overlooking the Loire, the hotel is a fine location for a peaceful stay in the Loire Valley area, with its restaurant and swimming pool, plus spacious grounds.
• South of Saumur (49 Maine et Loire)
  Le Chai de la Paleine ** A rather good quality two star hotel located in a country house in its own spacious grounds in the village of Le Puy Notre Dame. Deserves at least three stars. Very calm location and  welcoming owners. Unusually, this hotel has a library and reading room; restaurant close by.

• Poitiers (86 Vienne)
   €   Hotel de l'Europe **  Located in the heart of the old town, but mostly off the street, in walking distance of the main monuments, this is a large two-star hotel with two-star prices but all the features of a good three-star hotel. Garage parking available.

   €   The ** Hotel Montchapet is an inexpensive hotel in the centre of old Dijon. It is a clean and modern hotel in the old quater, easily accessible from the railway station and handy for visiting the city
• Beaune (21 Côte d'Or)
  €€€   Hostellerie le Cèdre  **** The best rated hotel in the centre of Beaune. Warm and welcoming hospitality, reasonably priced by four-star standards. Located in a spacious 18th or 19th century villa just on the edge of the old town, and in easy walking distance of the Hospices de Beaune . Ideal base for discovering the Burgundy vineyards and cellars.
• Beaune (21 Côte d'Or)
   €   Hotel de la Cloche  ** The best value for money in terms of two-star hotels in the centre of Beaune. An old coaching inn with parking in the courtyard. Some parts of the hotel could do with a bit of renovation, but the price, location and hospitality are great, according to many visitors.
• Autun - Morvan (21 Côte d'Or)
  Les Ursulines Hotel *** is a former 17th century convent, built above the Roman ramparts, with views to the Morvan Mountains. The hotel has a large terrace, a garden with outdoor dining in summer, and a good restaurant.  The hotel is located in a calm area 5 minutes on foot from the famous romanesque cathedral.
• Vezelay (89 Yonne)
  Hotel de la Poste et du Lion d'Or  *** An old traditional French hotel in the centre of Vézelay, at the foot of the hill leading up to the world-famous basilica. The hotel gets good write-ups stressing its calm location, comfort, spaciousness, cleanliness. 
• South of Auxerre (89 Yonne)
  Hotel le Mas des Lilas  ** Modern but original two-star hotel in a village 5 minutes south of Auxerre, and beside the river Yonne. Large mature gardens.  Close to the N6 highway, and easy access from the A6 Paris-Lyon motorway (exit 20). Ideal for a stopover or a couple of days discovering northern Burgundy
• Tournus - (71 Saone et Loire)
  Le Rempart **** is a hotel with 34 rooms and lots of character, housed in former 15th century guard house. It has two restaurants, a gourmet restaurant and a bistrot restaurant.  It is located in the centre of old Tournus, not far from the banks of the Saone and the historic St. Philibert church, one of the oldest in France, and is easy to find from the A6 motorway , exit 27.
